Let’s talk travel.
Not the highlight-reel, postcard-perfect, “look-at-me-on-a-cliff” kind—but the real kind. The kind that’s supposed to be for everyone.
Because here’s the truth: the time for accessible-minded tourism isn’t coming someday.
It’s already here—and it’s overdue.
A Soulful Stop at the Travel & Adventure Show (DC)
Recently, I attended the Travel & Adventure Show when it made its stop at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center here in DC. As someone who loves travel and lives with mobility needs, I walked in excited… and cautiously hopeful.
At every booth, I asked the same simple starter question:
“How accessible is this location?”
What I learned from that one question alone?
A whole lot.
When “Accessibility” Means… Getting There?
The most common response I received was immediate and confident—but not in the way you’d hope.
Most exhibitors answered by explaining how accessible the location is to get to:
- Flights
- Airports
- Transportation options
And while that matters, it quickly became clear that accessibility beyond arrival often wasn’t even on the radar.
It was eye-opening to realize that—even when an obviously disabled person is standing in front of them—many people still assume that getting there is the biggest hurdle. As if once I land, everything magically works out.
Spoiler alert: it doesn’t.
The Conscious Few (and the Gold Stars 🌟)
Now, credit where it’s due.
Some exhibitors paused and asked a much better follow-up question:
“What type of accessibility are you looking for?”
That question told me that at least they understood that accessibility isn’t one-size-fits-all. Mobility, sensory needs, accommodations, infrastructure—it all matters.
And then there were the standouts. The ones who didn’t hesitate. The ones who had information, ideas, and genuine enthusiasm.
Barbados, You Have My Heart (and a Standing Ovation)
Let’s give a soulful shoutout to Barbados for hands-down having the best booth experience when it came to accessible travel information.
Not only did they:
- Have immediate answers about accessibility on the island
- Speak confidently about inclusive tourism
- Show real interest in travelers with mobility and disability needs
They went a step further.
They literally pulled up a video of a Barbados-based business they’d recently seen on social media that caters specifically to travelers with disabilities and mobility needs.
That. Is. How. It’s. Done.
Oh—and the great energy didn’t hurt.
Neither did the sample shots of Bajan coconut rum. (Bonus points for that 😉)
If you attend the Travel & Adventure Show in the future, make it a point to stop by the Barbados booth. Trust me.
The Reality Check: When Hot Destinations Aren’t Accessible
On the flip side, I learned something disappointing—but important.
One of the hottest travel destinations of the past year or two—Bali—is, for the most part, inaccessible.
And unfortunately, Bali isn’t alone.
This is the reality for many destinations across the globe.
Now, I want to be clear: I understand that certain locations have limitations.
- Historic areas
- Beaches and natural terrain
- Hiking trails
- Protected landmarks
Those situations make sense.
What doesn’t make sense is how often accessibility is treated as optional rather than essential—especially in hotels, resorts, transportation services, wellness spaces, and guided experiences.
Accessibility Shouldn’t Require a Scavenger Hunt
Travel is not accessible if people have to:
- Jump through hoops
- Do a hundred hyper-specific Google searches
- Dig through social media comments
- Email five different departments just to get a straight answer
Accessibility shouldn’t live in fine print—or worse, nowhere at all.
If the information isn’t easy to find, clear, and upfront… then the destination isn’t truly inclusive.
Accessible Tourism Is a Necessity, Not a Niche
The travel industry—as a whole—needs to shift its mindset.
Accessible tourism is not a niche market.
It’s not a “special request.”
It’s not an afterthought.
It’s a necessity.
And with the growing rise of health and wellness tourism, it’s honestly wild how many businesses are missing the mark—because the people who could benefit most from wellness travel are often the very ones being excluded.
And that’s a shame.
Want to Catch the Travel & Adventure Show Yourself?
If you’re feeling inspired (or ready to start asking your own accessibility questions), the good news is—you don’t have to wait a whole year.
The Travel & Adventure Show is still making its way through eight more cities this year, giving travelers plenty of chances to explore destinations, connect with tourism boards, and see firsthand how accessibility is (or isn’t) being addressed.
👉 Check out the remaining dates and locations here:
Travel & Adventure Show Dates & Locations
And if it doesn’t hit a city near you this year, consider putting it on your must-do list for next year. Walking the floor, asking questions, and observing who shows up prepared can be just as revealing as the destinations themselves.
